The trick to keeping bananas and veggies fresh for longer
Did you overstock on veggies & are now worried they'll go bad? First of all, watch the video below. Second of all, you're welcome.
Starting with the main culprit, AKA the inspiration for this blog
Bananas
We've all wasted a few dozen bananas in our lifetime. It's only fair we balance the scale by not throwing away anymore. The perfect solution: freeze them.
You can either freeze them whole or in slices.
To freeze them whole - we recommend peeling them completely since unpeeled bananas stick together. Place them on a parchment paper-lined baking tray, and put them in the freezer for an hour or 2. After that, transfer them to an air-tight and freezer-safe kitchen storage container, and store them at the back of the freezer.
To freeze banana slices - slice the whole bananas (in bigger chunks to use for smoothies). Place them on a parchment paper-lined baking tray, and place the tray in the freezer till the slices are frozen. And repeat! Transfer the banana slices to an air-tight freezer-safe container and store them at the back of the freezer.
This method can guarantee you 2 to 3 months (at the very least) of unspoiled bananas!
Onions (chopped)
Now, we know onions last much longer than most produce - but sometimes the recipe you follow will call for just half an onion. That other cut-up half is susceptible to bacteria and mold and can spoil quickly.
1. Keep your onion clean when you know you'll need to store a portion of it. That means no cross-contamination with any uncooked meat or dairy products.
2. If you have half of an onion or chunky onion wedges: Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap. The plastic wrap will insulate the onion from the air, and retain its moisture.
3. Place smaller onion pieces in an airtight fridge storage container to prevent any outside exposure. You could even use airtight plastic bags, but fridge storage containers can be tossed in the refrigerator (as the name suggests), extending the shelf life even more.
4. Whole onions last 2 to 4 weeks, but chopped onions don't. By wrapping them in plastic or sealing and refrigerating them you can make them last 7 to 10 days at a minimum.
#BorosilTip: Use glassware storage containers instead of plastic containers to store onions. Why? Onions leave quite a strong smell; while plastic kitchen storage containers retain that smell, glass containers are odour-resistant.
Garlic
Like onions, garlic also leaves quite the smell. Also like onions, store peeled or chopped garlic in airtight glass storage containers in the refrigerator. By doing so, you keep them viable for up to 2 weeks!
Ginger
To restate a point from a previous kitchen hack blog -
The best way to store ginger (the gruelling root vegetable) would be in a napkin-lined storage container in a not-so-cool area of your fridge. Make sure not to peel the skin!
But what if you have peeled the skin or chopped it up?
Store the chopped or diced ginger in small storage containers (make sure it's glass) and place them in the refrigerator, or the freezer for more extended storage.
